It was 11 o’clock at night when the smoke detector sounded. Which one was it? After what seemed like an eternal search, John found it and discovered our 2-year old’s room was engulfed in flames and our son was covered in soot. Thus started my journey.

There were an awful lot of really hard days that followed. It took 557 days, exactly, until we were back in our home. The challenges seemed overwhelming: parenting our sons, both of whom became afraid of the dark, buying clothes and household goods, dealing with the insurance adjuster and company, architects to redesign the home, demolition experts to tear down what little was left, builders and other contractors to put it back, marriage struggles as we worked to address all of the above, you get the idea. Now multiply that by ten and you’ll start to feel the angst we experienced.

However, through it all, there were people who reached out to offer support in ways that never would have occurred to us (nor would we have ever asked). There were beautiful days, glimmers of sunshine and hope that we would be made whole. There were lucky “coincidences,” too many to count.

As my mind went from grief to trying to make meaning of the experience, I started a career reflection process that led me to the role I fill today. I started by looking back through my life to unearth my life blueprint. As I captured bullet points, in five-year increments, of the key events in my life, I learned a lot! I discovered:

  • what I truly disliked and would never, ever want to do

  • what an ideal day/week would look like in all of my life

  • the golden thread that tied together all of the elements of who I am

  • some interrupted dreams [yes, I did want to be a teacher at some point]

  • and driving motivators, what gets me up out of bed every single day

As a result of those reflections, I discerned a call to go back to school for a Master’s Degree in Spiritual and Pastoral Care. I understood that I needed a way to take all of my life lessons and use them in service of others. Taking that first giant step of even applying set the rest of my life in motion. I not only was accepted for my program of choice, the volunteer work I did in the church led to my receiving a tuition grant that took one-third of the cost off the top!

Almost 17 years later, I am still doing what I was created to do: facilitating coaching and support groups that empower others to make similar life transitions, recover from harmful experiences, and step into the person they want to be.

You, too, can do it!
